Electric renovation of an apartment: concrete example of works.

I am going to discuss today a case study to explain the method to be used to renovate the electrical installation of an apartment (This method can be applied in the case of a house as well). This article does not go into all the details, but allows to understand all the tasks to be carried out as part of an electrical renovation.

The context of the electrical renovation:

Building of the 70s, located in the Toulouse region (where I practice). The present electrical installation is very old, only the outlets of the kitchen and the bathroom own the earth.

The number of plugs is quite limited and the safety of the electrical installation was poor - that's why I intervened as part of this electrical renovation.

The board consists of earthenware fuses (called snuffbox fuses) and there is no differential protection 30mA!
At the sight of the electrical panel, you suspect that an intervention was necessary.

Changing the branch circuit breaker:

By observing the photo above, we can also notice the obsolescence of the branch circuit breaker. This indicates 650mA, the standard now requiring a 500mA differential branch circuit breaker (this value is related to the earth resistance to be read in this article).
The change request for the EDF circuit-breaker is to be made to ERDF services. Be careful, the situation can be a little awesome - in this case it was epic - so make your arrangements if you have to apply for a circuit breaker change, it can take a very long time.

Type of installation chosen for the passage of electrical networks:

The client had a second objective in addition to the electrical renovation, the sound and heat insulation of his apartment: So he opted for a false ceiling.

I proposed a recessed installation of the networks, with passage in the false ceilings and fallout of the networks of recessed way with bleedings. (brick walls).
Organization and workflow:

Safety of the installation and installation of the construction box:

The first step is the safety of the electrical installation: It simply aims to disable the installation with the circuit breaker: The latter must be put in the OFF position - by pressing the big button (usually red) .

In order to be sure of the decommissioning, a voltage measurement must be taken at the output of the branch circuit breaker terminals: Caution crucial step to be performed safely, with a multimeter.

After decommissioning, connect the field box to the output of the branch circuit breaker (which must always be switched off). It is this box that will allow you to have electricity during the electrical renovation work and allow other trades to work.

As part of the project of this article, I was working at the same time as the plumber and the plasterer.

The branch circuit breaker can then be restarted and start the actual work.

Removal of the old installation:

The first step is to remove all the old installation.

It starts with the electrical panel: Attention, the latter had to be disconnected in the previous step: A voltage check never hurts, I invite you to check that there is more voltage at the table before dismounting using a multimeter.

As part of this electrical renovation, I assist in particular the plaquiste at the beginning of the construction site, the latter having to deposit (break) some old partitions in which ducts circulate (no more current in these networks, the disconnection of the old electrical installation having been done, I repeat).

Once all the old equipment, the electrical panel and all the elements of the old electrical installation disassembled, it will be necessary to think about the installation from the electrical plane.

Study of the installation:

This is an important step, which is done with the help of the architectural plan but also by talking with the plaquiste. Starting from the example of this project, I chose the places to position my junction boxes.
